Luxor, Egypt
Travel & Leisure: Africa

Why were you inspired to do this?

30% of all of the significant monuments of the world can be found in Luxor, Egypt. 70% of Egypt's most popular monuments can be found there too. Luxor was home to the capital of Thebes for the ancient Egyptians and huge temples were erected to the gods and many of them can be seen today. Egyptian history is absolutely fascinating. Luxor is the resting place of King Tut and all the riches of his tomb were unearthed there making archeological history. Luxor is the place to go to experience what remains of that history firsthand. The essence of the ancient Egyptians can be felt as you traverse the Valley of the Kings and visit the temples and ruins.

How did you feel once you had accomplished this?

It turns out that I was travelling around the time of the unrest and revolution nearby. This left the usually extremely populated attractions virtually deserted. I enjoyed being able to see the sights in relative privacy. I did make some tourist friends along the way and they shared the experience with me.

What a terrific perspective! Most people would have been, well, concerned! Being there in a tumultuous time actually worked to your benefit and you were safe and free to explore. How cool! Did you travel alone? I love that idea, how you can just anywhere you want! Looking back, what was your favorite spot?
