Visit the lands of my ancestors

Why do you want to do this?

I know I have relatives overseas and seeing as I've lost touch with my own family, I think it would really help me on a personal level to feel more connected. My parents divorced when I was ten and I left home when I was fourteen. My father passed on when I was 27, just as I was beginning to build a relationship with him again. To this day, my mother and I do not speak. I think it'd be fantastic to visit the places where our family has it's roots.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Try to learn more about my relatives in Italy and Sicily on my father's side.

Try to learn more about my relatives in Poland and Russia on my mother's side.

Save Money.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Time and money - of course. Saving money for this trip is a big component, but so is the timing. I'm not so sure my children are ready to travel overseas and I'm not sure this is the trip I'd like to take them on, either. Leaving four kids with relatives isn't really an option either, so this one may need to wait until they're all older so we can travel together and enjoy it.

If I were you, I would definately wait so you could share this with your own family.  I think it would be more meaningful to have your children share the experience with you, and be able to feel the same connection to your past that you are seeking.

You would be surprised at how well young children can travel.  We have done some big trips with our kids at all ages from preteen to infant.  They all come with challenges and benefits, so just grab the bull by the horns and forge ahead with your goal.  Good Luck!!

Ah Robin, it's so great to see you back here.  How are things going?  I've been checking for updates on your goal too.  Thanks so much for your comments on this.  I really want to take them all, but I'm afraid it might have to wait until the twins are maybe 10 or 12 - so we're looking about four years or so.  The last trip we took together was amazing and they did all do well in the airport, hotel and on the resort too, so we're getting there. Thanks for the encouragement.

Wow, so you have relatives near my country (Lithuania), hope you can achieve this goal. Good luck on that :). I am sure this would be quite a nice experience.

Hi V, me too - it's a goal I've had for a long time.  In fact, I've been so incredibly blessed by a family who originated from your country.  The family who fostered me for nearly three years while I was in high school was from Lithuania.  Incredible people.  I owe them so much.  Very vibrant and resiliant too.  The history of your country and it's people is absolutely amazing.   I'm very happy to have a new Lithuanian friend.  Let me know how your test drive goes of that fantastic car you've got your eye on!!

:) nice to know, that you have some memories with my country :)... And I am also happy, that someone from other side of the ocean knows about my country, while mostly people don't even know the name and I am not speaking about history :). Thank you :).

I grew up close to Toronto.  There are many groups of different nationalities living within close proximity of each other.  There's a Little Italy district, China Town, many from Poland and Russia, the Ukraine, Lithuania, Slovenia, India, Korea, the Phillipines and many others.  A large part of Canada's population speaks French as their primary language and we have many Native Canadian groups throughout Canada too.  I love that our country is populated with such diverse ethniciites and I'm happy to learn about the various cultures and traditions.  It's part of what makes Canada a great country to live in.  I hope you'll come visit us sometime too.

Yea, I know, that Canada and USA have wide range people of different nationalities, while they were always the attraction centers to lithuanians and I guess we all have our ancestors in your continent, while there was a time, when our families had to run to survive and other side of Atlantic was the best place for that. Actually even these days we still have similar situation, that's why we have such a high number of emigrants working abroud so that they and there families could live a full life. But it's just the way life is, so we have to keep on doing the best we can. :) The same with me, so I realy hope to visit Canada one day, while I find it to be unique and interesting country, so it is in my plans alright :).

So the same with you, hope you will visit my continent and find what you are looking for :).

I can't wait!!  Looking forward to having the time and the resources to travel overseas and spend time getting to know the people and learn about the culture, traditions and history.

This is so great!  My husband and I dream of traveling overseas when the kids grow a little bit.  My grandfather is from northern Italy and my husband has Sicilian roots.  I was lucky enough to go to Venice and bus to Italy through Austria so I think I saw some history there but it would be nice to visit the actual village.  For some reason, Germany doesn't interest me much and I have A LOT of German roots.  I'm trying to pin down another line to figure out if I'm Scottish, Irish or English.  Either way, it gets me across the pond to the lords and ladies of the garter.  :o)

Very exciting WM - I so badly look forward to working on this goal in the future.  Maybe we'll meet in Sicily??  Are you as crazy for seafood as I am?  Venice must have been spectacular.  I look forward to seeing the sights of Italy one day.  I hear Germany is absolutely beautiful.  A lot of history there too, but I don't have any German ancestry.  Hope you'll keep us updated.
