Run at least 8 miles per week
Sports & Adventure: Fitness

Why do you want to do this?

Running is the least expensive way to maintain a healthy heart and weight - the $100 shoes last about 250 miles, and there's no gym membership required.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

A good alarm clock. In the winter, I have to make myself get up and go early, or leave it until dark. Committing the time to it will be the most difficult part.

The Nike Plus iPod system is one of the best motivators for getting out there. I will need to set goals there and keep track of them.

Motivating music! It's fun to go through iTunes and create energizing mixes.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Getting up early enough in the morning to get my run in before work.

OK, I have to ask, Are you doing this much running??

Haha, almost!  I'm still using the Nike+ system a lot - I set three new goals on Saturday for distance, speed, and frequency and have run my fastest three times all in the past week, and am ahead in all those little goals.

Right now, I'm closer to 5 miles per week, but now that I have daylight saving time on my side, it'll be much more realistic to reach this goal.  I hate running in the dark.

That is so good to hear!! Yes I must admit I'm happy but sad about time change. Unfortunately I do my hour walk at 6am and now its dark in the morning.

Hi Jessica,

I ran in the morning before work, for two-three years, when I was in my 30's. (I switched to hiking and other sports last fall, due to knee pain, but that's another story).

Have you investigated any running groups in your area? It's a great way to motivate yourself and learn more about this sport. The locally owned running shoe stores usually know about the local running groups. And It's fairly common for local running groups to have group runs in the weekend . . .
