Master compassionate communication!
Personal Development & Community: Charity

Why do you want to do this?

Compassionate communication is another term (my prefered term) for NonViolent Communication (NVC). To learn more about NVC go to www.cnvc.org. Basically, mastering compassionate communication would mean being able to communicate with anyone in any situation in a way that honors that we are all ONE... that honors their needs and my needs and finds a solution... that offers love and respect instead of defensiveness, ego-based manipulations, anger, hatred, misunderstandings, violence, etc. I want to master it because having a peaceful world starts right here with me. If I can have a peaceful life and a peaceful home. If I can communicate with my husband without getting frustrated, irrational, upset, angry, manipulative, etc... then that peace will spread to others. I don't often get violent, but NVC sees manipulative practices of guilt trips and passive agressive behavior as being the most insideous violent attack there is. Having grown up in an environment that encouraged such behavior, it's important to me to see myself doing it and stop. It's not anyone's fault... we were all just trained knowing that guilt and passivity are easy forms of getting what you want without raising one's voice. But I believe that I can have something different and for me I will find it very rewarding. The biggest first step for me is just realizing that I want something. That I'm experiencing a desire or oppinion and then asking for it... quite often I would have those things, not say anything out of habit, then resent my husband or friend for not giving me what I wanted. But no one I know is an effective mind reader, so it wasn't really a fair fight. Now just knowing that it's 1) ok for me to have desires and opinions and 2) people who care about me are open to hearing what they are and helping me meet those needs... makes all the difference. The next step for me is to hear those needs and desires in others.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Practice makes Progress! - I open up to the universe to allow a local or online practice group to find me at the perfect and right time.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Curious what is Compassionate Communication? And why do you need to master it?

Bill are you just trying to get me to log on and become active again?  It worked... Thanks for the nudge. It's mostly about practice at this point... I have the awareness... however without practice, it's sometimes easy to fall into old patterns.  One way for me to practice is to take an online course at NVCtraining.com.  Charlotte doesn't currently have a local group, so until it does, I will get my practice online.  I suppose this would be a nice time for me to commit to doing something like that.  But it feels like a "should"... so instead I'll just say i know that an opportunity to practice NVC will fall into my lap at the perfect moment and time.  All is well.  Thanks again!

oh, and the other benefit to "mastering" it would mean that I would be able to hold groups locally as a trainer.... if that should be part of my future path, i would be ok with that. :)

This is such a powerful goal and I know far too many people who communicate like a ping pong game. Trying to smash a point across or finesse a shot through passive aggressive behaviors. I took a course a few years ago and what it did was highlight how we came to communicate the way we do. Defense mechanism etc. Way to get what we want etc. I learned a great deal about how I communicate and how influences others. So was very curious when I saw your goal.

I like that you are so aware and present to this and wish you all the best. I believe what you are learning will help many people. Unfortunately all too often many people do not take 100% responsibility for who they are. Never been a fan of the cop out of that's just the way I am.

Personally I think you are well on your way to mastering:)

Thanks Bill... and thanks for creating this site... it is BEAUTIFUL in every sense of the word!

Thanks so much, That means a great deal to me. The goal was to create a site that touched, moved and inspired. So I'm grateful that I'm getting to meet people who are incredibly inspired and have so much depth. Looking forward to following your progress. Just met with a good friend and was telling him about your goal. He knows plenty of people who have studied Compassionate Communication. I've asked him to join in on your goal to send some resources your way. Very best Bill
