Become a secret agent.....of kindness
Personal Development & Community: Charity

Why do you want to do this?

Because I absolutely love the idea of Paying it Forward. By the way, if there is some person out there who hasn't seen that movie yet, you need to rent it now! But be forewarned, you must watch it with a box of tissues...yes, even you guys out there.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Creativity

Cloak of Invisibility

Ninja outfit (just kidding)....actually a wee bit of money

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

My "fear" of getting caught. I was never known for being stealthy! This project is such a simple concept. It was started by an awesome gal out in Pittsburgh who decided that she was going to spread kindness. She started the Secret Agent L program. What it basically is is you leave little "gifts" of kindness and caring for someone else. It could be leaving a trendy necklace with a note in the woman's restroom. Or you could leave a Starbucks gift card with a note on a table in Barnes & Noble. The possibilities are endless and you are only limited by your imagination. I stumbled upon this last year and I did it for half the year. I did 1 gift and inspirational card a week until my schedule got so hectic that it fell by the wayside. You can record your mission and take pictures and email them to her, as she might pick yours to feature on her website. I've done this, not only in the city I live in but also when I went on trips, in airports, etc. The only part I have trouble with is taking the pictures. I just know I'm going to get caught. So, while I've done this for part of last year, I have it listed in my "goals" because I want to continue it this year. It's such an inexpensive way to make a difference! One of my favorite movies too!!  Random acts of kindness should be everyone's goal for the new year!!

Great movie, and what a wonderful goal! I like the ideas you have and  I am really curious to hear about some of the things that you have done.  It inspires me to go forward with a particular item on my life list, sending a message in a bottle.

Well, now that my obsession with the 21-day Challenge has abated a bit (and I can't work out due to stomach virus or food poisoning) I decided to update you all on my progress here...because I know that you are all DYING to know :)  Well, I completed a mission the other day.  Since Valentine's Day (she said with a sense of dread) is this month, I'm focusing on love, beauty, self worth, etc.  I remember when I was in high school, we had this thing called Carnation Day, which was held around Valentine's Day. For $1 kids could buy carnations for their friends or snuggle bunnies and write a little note and then the carnations would be delivered in home room.  Whoever came up with that idea was brilliant (sarcasm dripping from every word).  I mean seriously people, who does this to a bunch of self conscious high schoolers???  Can't you see it?  The "popular" kids get flooded with carnations of every color, while others wait and hope that they get some so they wouldn't look like "losers".  There were even some girls that didn't get ANY.  Looking back, if I had the money I would send every girl in my class one.  But, I digress.  So, what I'm doing this month is mainly targeting women.  Yesterday, I left a pocket-sized book, Every Woman Should Have a Blowtorch....a Guide for Feisty Females and a card in the gym locker room.  The card had a quote by Anne Frank and a little note from me stating that I hope this brightened their day and if it did, to Pay It Forward.  I hope it gave someone a chuckle. I hope to complete my next mission by the weekend.  I'm still thinking of what it could be, so stay tuned.  I wish I could upload pics to the goals, but I only see that option for the stories....oh well.

that's awesome!!!!  I HATED Valentine's day at school.  I think I would specifically get, or keep, a boyfriend just to make the day bearable.  I adore that you are doing this.

I LOVE this goal.  I HATED V-Day at school too.  Who comes up with this stuff??  Carnation Day??  What were they thinking?  Can't wait to hear your next mission.  You could always end this goal with some pictures and post the story and then start the same goal Part 2 for this year.  That might work.  I'm wondering if you'll reserve March 9th for your Random Act of Kindness for my friend Kristen's little boy Thomas.  Here's a link to the group that'll tell you all about it.  Thanks so much.  Kristin is actually on the MLL site somewhere with a story about her little Thomas, but she hasn't been able to get back in.

Ok, everyone...well, I have done several RAK's over the past few weeks and I will try to update you soon.  However, today I want to focus on Andrea's post above.  I thought this was a great thing to do to celebrate the life of little Thomas....thank you Andrea for posting the link.

So, in honor of little Thomas my son and I made blankets to give to the kids in the hospital. I had a son in the hospital for quite a while when he was 7 and it was a very scary time. At the time they didn't give the kids blankets, but they gave them stuffed animals. After he got out and recovered (he was hit by lightening) he wanted to do a "buddy drive" so that all the kids had a little buddy to hold when they were scared. Well, now hospitals are accepting blankets. So we made some blankets out of fleece (it's still very cold here in the frozen wasteland known as Idaho). We are probably going to make a bit more and give them to the kids in the hospital as well. I also did sort of a kindness blitz by strategically placing iTunes gift cards (with a card and explanation) in 3 different locations. Each card also encouraged people to Pay It Forward. Thanks again, Andrea for informing me of those poor parents who lost their son. No parent should ever lose a child. My heart breaks for them.
