Staying Happy and Positive
Personal Development & Community: Self-development

Why do you want to do this?

The last 21 years of my life have left me a negative person. Last summer I saw the affects of positivity and how it helps you grow and become a stronger person. I gained soo much and opened new doors in my life. Now I feel as if I lost a lot of the happiness I had and I am going to commit to myself to make sure I get what I deserve in my life. To become the man that I have always wanted to be I must be positive and happy. I have lived a life of sadness and depression and that is not for me.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Think positively on a daily basis by re-framing negative thoughts into realistic and positive thoughts. I will re-frame negative beliefs three times a day.

Choose happiness as my emotion rather than sadness or depression. Re-affirm to myself that I am the only person that can make myself happy. I am the only person that can affect how I feel. If someone makes me feel negative or positive emotions it's because I allowed them to.

Accomplish one of my goals this year. (Sky Diving) 4. Watch the videos that I have.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

The biggest barrier that is going to stop me from achieving my goal is my mind. If I stay into negative states it could cause me to forget or give up. External events might also play a role in stopping me from achieving my goals but I have a solution by re-affirming that I am the only person that has control over my life. Laziness is also a a barrier to achieve my goal since I will not want to take the time to do the things I need to do.

I love what you've written here and it's such a great goal.  It's fantastic that you've chosen to improve your overall attitude.  Congratulations.  Can you tell us how it's going so far? Have you noticed that by consciously making an effort to keep a positive mind that it has affected your life in positive ways?  I'm reminded of a quote that I'll share with you here:

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind."
~ William James

Hi Andrea thanks for the follow and for you comment. I actually started this whole change back in june of last year and was doing great for 4 months. But with school and all I couldn't focus on myself and have gone back to old habits. Making a conscious effort at keeping positive made a huge positive effect in those 4 months. I felt so much happier, I talked to more people, I didn't focus on what others thought of me, I was going for my goals, and overall just really happy and optimistic about life. That's a great quote thank you for it, I'm definitely going to add that to my collection.

Hello again W.  We're practically neighbours!  I grew up in Mississauga myself.  I went to Holy Name of Mary on Mississauga Road, but live just outside of Barrie these days.   Which school are you attending?

You gotta love how simple it is to fall into old habits once you've made progress toward a positive change, eh?  I'm on this kick this year to lose 60 pounds.  The frustration of it all is that I lost 47 last year and then put a bunch back on over the summer because I got off track with my routine.  I'm so frustrated at having to 're-lose', but the benefits far outweight the drawbacks so I'm back at it again this year.  I hope you won't give up on trying to keep a positive mind.  CJ Calvert has a great book out right now called 'Living an Exceptional Life.'  Here's a link to his site:  http://www.cjcalvert.com .  I was so fortunate to hear him speak about attitude determining your altitude in life.  Whenever I find my attitude needs some adjustment, I pick up a book.  20 minutes a day seems to tap my thinking back into alignment. You mentioned some other goals... maybe you'd like to add them to your page here?Writing them down and keeping them in front of you increases your chances of making them your reality.  Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Andrea, sorry about the late reply. I have been busy with school, work, and the exercises that I have been doing. That's so cool I used to go to Oakridge Public School near Holy Name of Mary when I was a kid and right now I'm just finishing up my degree in mechanical engineering from Ryerson University. I have to give you a lot of credit for losing 47 pounds. I know losing weight is one of the hardest things to accomplish, just remember if you did it once you can do it again. I feel like when I stopped doing all the exercises that I was doing in the summer my mind went back on autopilot and just went back to old behaviours instead of the new ones that I was trying to program into it. Right now I am reading Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins. It's exactally the stuff that I was doing in the summer and is really helping me with getting back on track with what I need to do with my life. Btw I did make one of my other goals public if I want to check it out ur more than free to. But I think all my goals really came back to one main thing and that is to become a better man for everyone that is in my life or going to be a part of it. I just want to live a happy and successful life.

Congratulations ... Mechanical Engineering...  You must be brilliant!!  That book you're reading right now isn't one I've read yet.  I'll have to add that one to my list if you can recommend it.  I'm heading over to your other goal to check it out now.
