Create MLL Portfolio for each of my kids
Relationships: Family

Why do you want to do this?

I have always said I'd start a scrap book for each child, but have never been able to get to it. We have a tonne of pictures and I've kept a journal for each of my four kids since their birth, recording dates of their milestones and my feelings about it all. I'd planned on passing the journal and scrap book along to them each when the time was right. Putting together a portfolio of their milestone moments for each of them would be something they'd enjoy and a perfect substitute to the scrap booking idea. They all love hearing stories about themselves when they were too young to remember and I'm sure with a bit of digging, I can put the pictures to the stories too. Plus, I'd also like to start working with each of them on their own goals for themselves. Goal setting has been such a huge factor in my own life and I'd like them to learn and practice the same success principles. I think it would be invaluable one-on-one time with mom and a safe place for them to start to work with a computer too.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

I'll need to set each child up with their own e-mail account so that eventually they'll be able to continue adding to their list on their own as they grow up.

A plan! It's a real challenge to carve out one-on-one time with each of my children as they are all so close in age.

A reward system. I know that they are really going to enjoy this exercise. So, I'm thinking that 'sitting with mom and working on their MLL portfolio is going to have to be a reward for exceptional behaviour.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Time!! Always a factor.

Glad you like it.  I think they'll like it too.  I need to get organized though and this project is going to take time.  Thank you for your kind comments.

Andrea, this is brilliant. I have been doing the same for my daughter, she loves it. She even did a private version of the 21-Day Challenge, learning five new words a day.

You will be thrilled to hear that the beta version of My Life List KIDS is well under way.  It will be a completely secure application here on the site, available only to members' children. It will be ready for testing and launch this spring! So glad there is some interest here. We love the idea of starting children early on their roadmap for life. How inspiring!

Perfect!  I am so excited about this.  What a fantastic idea Shea!  Great job with M too.  I don't know if you've checked it out yet or not but Gina McNight's book, 'The Blackberry Patch,' has some fantastic words in it.  It's great to find a book that uses vocabulary that's not quite so childish.  I caught my oldest (she's 9) reading it to my twins last night before bed and it made me so proud listening to her sound out the words on her own. It's amazing catching them doing something that just warms your heart.  5 new words a day for 21 days is a huge number.  Good for her.

Thanks WM.  It looks like we're in the company of brilliance though, because Bill & Shea are already working on something special in this area.  Fantastic.  I'm looking forward to seeing some milestone kids stories on here soon.  Who can't resist baby/kid pictures? I can't think of a mom out there who can.  Congratulations on your recent story too and thanks for your kind comments on my story as well.  Exciting stuff ahead.

This much closer to making your children's goals a part of their future planning! GoalKidz.com will be a secure tie-in to the My Life List family of upcoming apps. We'll be sure to let everyone know when it's ready to launch because we're going to need testers. Email me at shelagh@mylifelist.org if you want to be a tester and get this new service for free. Would love to get everyone's feedback, as always, so we can adjust and make it just what works for MLL members.

I just had my 11 year old sit down and create a MLL account.  Plan to encourage him to keep at each of his goals each and every day.  Thanks for the idea!

Hey Alex, I'm so happy to read your post.  Thanks for sharing.  Yes, my daughter is overdue for this - she just turned 10.  We've been going through the older photos for me to scan so I can add in stories from when she was born:  her birthdays until now, her first goal at soccer, learning to walk, learning to swim, tapdancing...  I'm thinking it can kind of be a photojourney of her life with the milestones and then she can take over with her goals.  I wanted to teach her to keyboard correctly before handing the reins over to her though.  The hunt and peck method is killing me to watch and I'd rather she learned proper technique on the keyboard before she develops bad habits.  Maybe that's something to think about once you get on the school board?? When to introduce students to keyboarding.  Either way though... it's a great way to spend time together and teach some important life skills, goal setting and dream building among them.  Have a blast chasing those goals with your kids.
