Why do you want to do this?

I'm not a particularly unhealthy person. I thank God often that I am able to say "No thanks" to extra servings of delicious food (even dessert!) when I'm satisfied. Other than shopping, however, I never have particular needs to leave the house. I want to improve my body and mind. Stretch my legs, get some fresh air, maybe meet some people... I want to move.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

Walk with my husband to and from class each day. We live in family housing on the edge of campus, so it's only ~20 minutes of walking each day, but that's more than I normally get.

Jog two or three times a week along the paths by the river. We live right next to the Charles River. It's the perfect place to improve ones fitness.

Practice yoga three mornings a week, alternating with the jogging days. I've got a yoga mat and book which I've used a few times, but I don't want to invest money I don't have in classes if I'm not investing the time already.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

I'm a lazy bum and a big procrastinator.

Since posting my goal last week, I have done a great deal of moving all week. I usually sit at home most of the day, moving as needed, but this week there was non-stop drilling right under our apartment from 8:20 am to 3pm, and it gave me a massive headache. So I left the apartment out of the need to retainmy sanity and not shoot myself or the construction workers in the head.

During this time I spent a lot of time walking to different places. I walked up Mass Ave over to Broadway to find Gather Here, a little craft/sewing lounge. Lovely place. Walked around Harvard Square, and had a bite at J.P. Licks. Walked back towards home, very slowly.

I wandered through MIT, went to some offices, hung out for different periods of time at the student centre, even when they were drilling in the rain! Another day I headed over to the Galleria to blow many hours and got driven nuts from the Christmas music. At least it wasn't drilling.

Friday I was fortunate to go shopping in the middle of the day, but had to do stuff in the house beforehand, but they still stopped at 3.

I think this week consisted of a lot more moving than I usually do, but not the kind of scheduled morning yoga or jog I'd like. I think it would have been easier to do yoga in the morning if, perhaps, drilling was a more relaxing sound, or maybe not going on right beneath my feet.

Hi Jo, I just noticed your goal here and was wondering how things are going.  It sounds like you have so many interesting places you can walk to.  How are you enjoying your yoga?

2/4/2012 3:12:56 PM

Hey Andrea, well, I guess I'm a little intimidated by it. I do the Sun Salutation, but all the other moves look a little scary. I guess it's just a matter of get-up-and-go. I've just got to do it.

Since the 21-D/C I've been bumming around more. Do I really need a competition to do exercise???

This afternoon I'll be out trying to jog. Maybe I'll try out a new yoga move in my stretches. I can walk for hours, but for the life of me I couldn't jog 2 straight minutes. Gotta work on that :)

Wow. I just got a job, in which I work 11.5 hours a day and I'm basically just standing around. then I get home and I'm too tired to do anything. So I don't. I thinkthe next few months are not going to be so healthy.

Maybe I should try to get up early and do it then. hmmmm.

2/12/2012 9:15:50 AM

Hi Jo, congratulations on the new job.  What is it that you do for 11.5 hours?  It's understandable that you'd be wiped after all that, so maybe getting a bit of a work out in before you begin your day might be a good plan.

I do kosher supervising at a servery in a univeristy dining hall. I've got a bar stool there that I can sit on for a lot of the day, but since I do serving as well, I'm frequently jumping up and running back and forth in my little ten foot box. Right now I'm off for Passover, so I've got errands to do which have been waiting for a few months....

Andrea, Your idea of (getting up early to start) exercising early is a really good one. My husband is more of a night owl, so I end up staying up to be with him for the last couple of hours of the day, and neither of us have ever particularly been morning people. It'll be a challenge, but from what I've heard, a most worthwhile accomplishment if I can achieve it.

I'm super stoked! This afternoon I'm walking over to Marathon Sports in Boston to get some new sneakers. My feet will be so happy! I also just purchased "Zombies, Run", for the ipod, so I'm hoping that if I ever use them together I'll actually improve my speed and cardio fitness (I cannot run for the life of me. Not further than five feet, anyways).

I'm going to go write out yoga and jogging right now on my calendar, as I mentioned in my description above. I'm more likely to do it if I see it on the calendar.

Great plan Jo.  It always helps to write things down- apparently, it's been proven that you do have an increased chance of getting things done once it's written.

A friends wedding at the end of the month=perfect incentive to get moving.

Mini-goal: Be fit enough not to get out of breath dancing at my friends wedding.
