Read 50 books in 2012

Why do you want to do this?

It is encouraging to read the written word...get absorbed in the tales that the author has put down on paper. The books may be to escape from reality; or it may be to learn something new; to learn about someone's life; to discover a new place; to have an adventure!

What three things will you need to make this happen?

books...I love the paper version, but am thinking about getting a Kobo reader, as this may entice me to read even more!

an open-mind...

time...always a challenge

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

the time thing will more than likely be the challenge, but I think that I can do it!

I'm so excited for my Kobo.  It's on it's way.  Can't wait and can't wait to read the list you're diving into for 2012.  Please share.

I'm glad to see you're doing this goal again.  It's awesome and I love to get my book list from your lists!!  I may actually shoot for just 1/2 of your goal!

I'm almost done reading the Sauvignon Secret (a wine murder mystery series I've been reading for years), and will be starting Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter as soon as I'm done.

1/5/2012 3:26:15 PM

Just got the Kobo last night.  Loading it up today.  Hubby loaded the full Patricia Cornwell and John Grisham collections so I'll always have something interesting to dive into.  I'm after The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman, The Tipping Point and Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, Dark Places and Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, Miles From Nowhere by Nami Mun.  I can't believe how many books it holds.  It's great for reading in bed too - a highly adjustable light comes attached to the cover.  Wishing you the best and looking forward to your list.

So, what are you reading so far this year?

1/14/2012 1:43:14 PM

Andrea - I am really thinking of investing in a Kobo...i love the real thing (a book) but also love the idea of being able to carry the Kobo in my purse for my subway rides, rather than bringing another bag for the 1300 pg book that I am currently reading!

Zinful - the reading has been a bit slower over the past couple of weeks...i am currently reading the 5th book in the Outlanders series by Diana Gabaldon...it is 1300 + pages! I have a very long list that I would love to read in the coming months, and will be sure write about them in the coming weeks. Suggestions are welcome!

Hey Heather... yes do it.. worth every cent.  I'm loving mine and can't stop reading.  Very convenient.  I'll have to put Diana Gabaldon on my list - I haven't read anything of hers.

1/16/2012 12:32:36 AM

Hello Heather (My fellow Canadian)!  You can usual get an e-reader from your local library.  It may take time to get one, but it is a nice way to "try before you Buy".  Good luck with your goal!  I have added you so I can continue to watch and support your efforts.

thanks for the tip Erik. I will have to check that out this weekend...good thing I just found my library card :)

If you want to borrow my kindle feel free to do so - Brand and I both have one and love them! Amazing for travelling and going to work. Highly recommend it :)

Congratualtions on your 2nd place finish!  Andrea is tough to beat!  I cam e2nd to her last year.  Great keeping up with yur goal and I am sure the money is not as good a feeling as changing some fo the old habits over the last 21 days!

OK - here's a book suggestion.  I'm not yet done with it, but I finally got into reading my first book club book (even though they met 2 weeks ago and I missed it).  I'm reading Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin.  I picked it up on Sunday this past week and haven't been able to put it down (unless I had to).

I, too, am trying to figure out between the nook, the kindle, the nook tablet or the kindle fire.  I seriously may end of up buying one e-ink type and one tablet type.  I think we, as a family, would really get some use out the tablet, but I really want to be able to read outside, which I won't be able to do with the tablet type.

2/2/2012 9:35:41 AM

K, I added that to my list too Zin.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Heather, another person recommended the Diana Gabaldon series to me - third one now.  I know it's a big commitment though and I just can't seem to stop myself from READING!  Thankfully, with all the waiting around at the hospital and on Frank's appointments, I have lots of reading time on my hands too.  What's next on your list.  I think I'm going to increase mine to 50 to match you.  :-)

2/22/2012 10:28:14 PM

Wow...I can not believe that it has taken me this long to actually say that I have FINALLY finished Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon...and am now onto the next one. addicted!!!

So, here is the start of my count...with a long way to go!

  1. The Fiery Cross - Diana Gabaldon
  2. Bossypants - Tina Fey (for bookclub...amazingly funny!)

I have a bunch of books on the list...thanks for the suggestions everyone! Looking forward to diving back into reading a little more...and start catching up to Andrea!!

2/23/2012 2:46:33 PM

Adding Bossypants to my own list Heather.  Thanks for the update.

2/25/2012 2:02:18 PM

I planned to add Bossypants to my list too.  Thanks for reminding me!  There's an autobiography from Rob Lowe that I want to read, too.

3/12/2012 2:25:48 PM

Zin...i read an excerpt from the Rob Lowe autobiography...and it was really good. It is also on my list :) I am still trekking through book 6 of the series...am on pg 1267...so I can see the light at the end of the journey. Hopefully they wont leave me hanging, so that I can get to the other great books that are on my list, and beside my bedside table!

3/17/2012 9:08:14 PM

Finally finished book 6 of the Diana Gabaldon series:

3. A breadth of Snow and Ashes - Diana Gabaldon
I think that I will hold off on this series for a bit, so that I can start to really sink my teeth into some more books...50 is a long way to go!!!

3/17/2012 9:11:28 PM

 Did it leave you hanging?

3/17/2012 9:17:33 PM

of course...they always do!!! but I am also getting a little tired of the story line...still intrigued, but tired. Time to move onto a few others that are sitting on my bedside table ;)

3/17/2012 9:28:31 PM

Let us know your next choice.  My list is so long these days because of all the recommendations from you guys.  Love it.

3/18/2012 8:38:12 AM

if you haven't already read it - Jitterbug perfume by Tom Robbins is my fav.! Good luck!

3/23/2012 12:17:57 PM

OK...so this week, for some reason, I was able to cruise through a couple of books:

4. Mating Rituals of the North American Wasp by Lauren Lipton (read it in one night - easy and cheesy...as I came to the very end, I was like...hmmm, this story seems familiar, and I think it will end this way. Sure enough, it did! I guess it was one that I had read years ago...lol!)
5. Chasing Harry Winston by Lauren Weisberger - this one had been on my book shelf for a long time, but I had never read it. A great read for the "summer like" days that we have been having.
