Go camping with my boys
Travel & Leisure: North America

Why do you want to do this?

I think camping would really bring out the kid in me. The kid that used to love building forts and tree houses or exploring the forests around my grandparents' house. Neither of my two boys have ever had these kinds of adventures (time have changed), and so I want them to see how much fun it can be to explore, live off the land, etc. As an added bonus, I think it will improve my relationship with them. Having four kids, it's oftentimes so hard to give any one of them the individual attention they crave from us.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

I need to set aside a couple of days where it will be convenient for us to take the trip. Mark it on my calendar, request the days off, book the campsite (if required).

I have some of the things we'll need, but I know there are going to be other items I need to buy, such as fishing gear, sleeping bags, cooking utensils, etc. However, I think my parents may have a lot of this stuff already and I can borrow from them. I will have to check with them about this.

I want to make sure I pick a great location, so I will need to spend some time researching where the best place would be to accomplish what I want to do and what I want myself and the boys to get out of this trip.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Not overburdening my wife while we are gone. I travel frequently for business and it's always taxing on her when I'm gone. I just need to make sure that I set up the child care for the times when she's not able to be home with the two girls.

I love camping, and I love this goal!!  I will say one of the reasons I love camping is because I did it often with my father ~ so, as a grown daughter whose Dad took her camping as a kid, don't forget the girls!!!

He did something similar, taking us each separately get that individual time.  Maybe take the boys on one trip and the girls on another ~ just a thought!

Thanks for the tip.  I probably wouldn't have thought about doing that, but your story about your dad give me a good reason to rethink it.  Right now, my girls are only 1 year olds, but I think sometime down the road, I will do just as you suggest.

I was highlight a map of the United States to see how many states I have visited so far in my life.  Found out I've been to 31 of them.  Then I got to thinking maybe I could kill a few birds with one stone.  I could take my two boys an a road trip.  Head up to the Baseball Hall of Fame in New York, then continue on to Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, stopping along the way to camp for the night.  I can't really think of any other good reason to hit those three states other than to enjoy the great outdoors.  I doubt business will ever take me there.

I camped a lot with Cub Scouts.  If you need some gear let me know.  I probably have a few items if you need them.  Great goal!

I may have to take you up on that Neil!  I'm definitely overdue for a get-a-way.  Haven't taken a single day off since December.

Great idea. Camping as a kid are some of my favorite memories. I'm from Boston, and I can tell you that up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire are some of the best campgrounds you can find. They're in the White Mountain National Forest, so you get the great outdoors, but not entirely too far from civilization to be difficult. I would reccomend checking out sites along the Kancamagus Highway (yes, I had to look up that spelling) and also a bunch of the old roadside attractions near there like Clark's Trading Post.

You'll have a blast!
