Start Organic Farm in Kenya
Personal Development & Community: Volunteering

Why do you want to do this?

When visiting an organic farm when in Kenya in August 2011 I found out how easy it is to be able to grow crops in such a dry area. I met the women from the Makindu Friend's Women's Group to talk with them their hopes and dreams about being about to feed their family. We have a piece of land now (see photo). We are in the process of clearing and fencing the land (January 2012). I had some great support the last few months to get donations to get their work done. I'm currently trying to fundraise for a well and greenhouse and fish basin. More information: www.kenyafarm.org

What three things will you need to make this happen?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :) Donations!

Willing workers, volunteers to visit the farm - free labour!

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Collecting the money and funds.

How fantastic.  Wishing you the absolute best with this project.  Looking forward to your updates too.  Love the orphanage idea.  I can only image how challenging it is there.  Look forward to your expanding list.

Thanks Andrea, your kind words really mean a lot! The piece of land was bought for the women by a friend I met the first time i was in Kenya who was in my work camp. A guy from Alaska actually :) He bought it as a loan for the women. They will pay it back whenever they get things up and running and can sell some items. This is why i'm so focused on fundraising to get it started. I don't want them to have a burden of another loan. So great of him to put his own money towards it and not be concerned about when it will be paid back.

All updates can be found at: www.kenyafarm.org

I'm hoping to have some photos soon of the work that has been completed so far (fencing). I'm realllllly excited about the potenial of this project. It's going to help the women and their familes as well as other schools in the area. My wish after a year or so after it's going well that the women will branch out to similar women's groups to help them start the same thing.

One goal of the women's group is to build an orphanage, which will be built on the site of the farm, so that's something that will hopefully appear on my list soon! ;)

What a fantastic goal JC.  I'm so excited to follow your progress with this.  Talk about pulling something together to make a significant difference for others.  If there was a philanthropy prize on this site... you would absolutely need to receive it.  You actually acquired land in Kenya for this project?!!??  Amazing.  I'm blown away by your goal and can't wait to read your success story.

I'm so proud of you for helping these women accomplish their dream. You should post your other video too!

Thanks. I'm so excited about this and we are starting on the work now. I'm hoping to visit again in the summer. I have some fundraising plans over the next few months to try and get some money for the well and greenhouses. There is so much potential.
