95 percent efficiency at work (21 days until it's a habit)
Career & Finance: Employment

Why do you want to do this?

I have a lot of flexibility and freedom at work, and because I'm the boss, there's no one watching over my shoulder. This is a good thing. But it can also be a bad thing if you're in the habit of using the internet for personal reasons and it gets out of hand. There are some days when this is the case with me. I want to start accomplishing more and feeling proud of what I've done when I leave the office each day.

What three things will you need to make this happen?

A better to-do list that will guide what I do each day.

Software that can either limit or time how long I'm surfing the web each day (and that can distinguish between work and personal reasons, if possible).

Positive reinforcement, whether from myself, my board of directors, or any of my colleagues.

What is the biggest barrier to your achieving this?

Lack of self-control and burning passion for personal interests.

Hey Alex, I like your goal here and it's great that you gave yourself a 5% latitude too.  It's also great that you have a burning passion for so many interests too.  Terry Gogna has an awesome book about time management and a program (P.E.M. System) geared to achieving maximum daily efficiency and success.  Here's a link.  This man changed my life.  http://www.terrygogna.com

I think I accomplished this today, although I don't have an exact count of how long I surfed.  It was only to post this goal here, check Facebook one time, and that's it!

A -- nice goal! It's very easy to become obsessed with online pursuits. Luckily, mine involves helping others achieve their major life goals! I can tell you, I work on a List of 5 every day, five things I can actively accomplish that give me a sense of productivity and allow me to track my progress. Before I shut it down for the night, I make my list for tomorrow and in the morning I know right where to start. Maybe that would work for you, too?

You are doing great in this Challenge, on all of your goals! Keep it up. You're focusing on good habits, and that will have a powerful impact on every part of your life. Nice job.

Alex - this is a great goal!!  One I've been working on (quietly) myself.  I've been reading so much lately that, as an employee, you should give more than you get.  So, I don't know how this relates to being the employer, but I imagine it's the same!!!  Make sure that you're putting in more than you're being paid for and that's how you will progress....

Now, I've gotta get back to work, LOL!

Wow Alex - that's fantastic.  You're really sticking to your goal.  I've gotta get back to work too, lol.

This one has been going so well that I'm finding I'm not getting on My Life List enough to keep up in the 21-day challenge!  The irony!

1/21/2012 1:13:17 PM

Well, good job then!!!  Keep it up =)

1/23/2012 9:31:53 AM

Ha, Alex, that's probably good news, if you're getting a lot of work done! I have been so busy lately, I haven't been on here myself, and this IS my job! There are so many other pieces to it, though, not just the fun stuff of reading, encouraging and learning with you all.

You are motivating everyone to keep their minds focused and not allow distractions, which is very difficult at times. Not everyone is engaged with what they do, it's just a paycheck. Becoming invested in your work, accomplishing a lot, caring about it ... those are all qualities that we end up proud of in ourselves, whether we're boss or employee. You get out of it what you put into it, right? Thanks for the inspiration!

I think this week, for me, I've had 150% efficiency at work.  I guess that's what you get in training.

I just wanted to check in to see how you were doing...  You haven't checked in in a while.  So, keep up the good work, I guess  =)

1/25/2012 8:07:03 AM

Yeah, I've been a little busy lately.  I was in a training conference in Texas since Sunday, which has got me out of my routine, for sure.  First day back at my desk since then.  Thanks for all the comments, everyone!  Sorry I haven't been so good at checking in with yours each day :(

Worked pretty hard today.  Got two big projects done in one day.  I worked with a sense of urgency, which was a good feeling.  I think knowing what's at stake and when things need to get done are helping to create that sense of urgency.

Some days have been really good.  Some days have been extremely bad.  I hate that guilty feeling I have at the end of the bad days.  I really have to keep working at this until it truly is a habit because it's way too important  not to address.

Just checking in to see how this is going.  I need to work at this myself.
