Why were you inspired to do this?
Climbing mountains and being out in nature is my passion. This was an exotic location, a reason to visit Russia and the opportunity to climb one of the seven summits.
What were 3 things you did to make this happen?
Researched all the guiding services that offer Mt Elbrus as a destination. Decided on RMI for their experience and also that fact that they are one of very few companies to offer the north side as a route choice.
Discovered that the lesser climbed north side is a more attractive option and offers a more traditional mountaineering experience as opposed to the south side.
Signed up, paid my deposit and started training for the climb!
How did you feel once you had accomplished this?
A great sense of accomplishment for the overall adventure. We were strangers in a strange land. It was very unique, not only because of the location in Eastern Europe and the cultural exposure but, because of the route we took and the challenging weather conditions experienced on the mountain.
Additional notes and tips:
Here are some links to video footage taken on the mountain. This first clip is inside the tent at high camp 15,500' where the winds were blowing 50-70mph and did not stop for 48 hours: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPU6MFhV9Bs&feature=PlayList&p=1971B419600BFFC0&index=4 This clip is from the summit (I'm the one in black wearing bolle goggles): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIrfedaybbo&feature=PlayList&p=1971B419600BFFC0&index=3
