Why were you inspired to do this?
I’ve enjoyed some fantastic life experiences over the course of my life and would usually write a story after each adventure and send out to a group of friends. This caught the attention of a University friend who was working on an idea to help him get focused on what he wanted to do with his life. He wrote all his goals on a sheet of paper and called it My Life List.
Personally I had been keeping a 'life list' for years so I recognised the possibilities it had to help people accomplish their goals and become more fulfilled. At the time I also felt I needed to take a risk and apply my enthusiasm to running my own business after nearly 15 years in corporate life, so My Life List came to me at the right time.
What were 3 things you did to make this happen?
Savings - I had saved a bit of money and was prepared to dedicate my self to the business knowing that it would take a bit of time & money to launch. Thankfully I had savings as things took longer and more money than I expected.
Family & Friends - I can't say enough about the support I received from my family & friends. There have been many challenges along the way and having a supportive group to reach out to was really important. This support forms a major part of the Create. Act. Celebrate. Methodology to help people achieve their goals.
Belief - Starting a new business is not easy and its actually been harder than I ever imagined. I had many moments of self doubt and fear where I questioned my ability to accomplish my goal. To get through these moments I made myself look back and write about past experiences where I was successful. The process of reflection and celebration helped me create a story of success from my own Life.
How did you feel once you had accomplished this?
This has been an incredible journey. Taking such a massive financial and career risk to become a founding partner of My Life List has certainly been the highlight of my career to date.
I’ve enjoyed creating a new company from scratch and in the process I’ve learned a great deal about business and myself. So one of my aims would certainly be for My Life List to flourish as a successful company providing tools to help people achieve their own life list goals and be more fulfilled.
One of the most fulfilling part of our business is hearing the stories of our users who have accomplished a life list goal. One story that I find personally satisfying is from an ex-colleague. She created her life list and realised she had the ability to accomplish all the things on her list this year. She’s now climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa, started a new career and is getting ready to run in the New York City Marathon. As she celebrates one experience she meets new people who expose her to new experiences, which she adds to her list and the cycle continues.
There is a sequence that happens when you accomplish the goal at the 'Top of your List' For me starting a new business led me to California and a whole new group of friends and new experiences.
